About Harrodsburg

Harrodsburg, located in Mercer County, Kentucky, is a small town with a rich history dating back to the late 1700s. It is the oldest permanent English settlement west of the Allegheny Mountains, and it was originally named "Harrod's Town" after its founder, James Harrod. Today, the town has a population of approximately 8,000 people and continues to be a vibrant and historic community.

In 1774, James Harrod led a group of approximately 30 men to the Kentucky wilderness, where they established Harrod's Town. The town quickly grew, and by 1777, it had a population of over 300 people. However, in 1778, the town was attacked and destroyed by Native Americans, and the settlers were forced to flee. The town was eventually rebuilt, and it became a hub of trade and commerce in the early 1800s.

During the Civil War, Harrodsburg was a strategically important location because of its location on the Dixie Highway, which was a major transportation route connecting the North and South. As a result, the town was occupied by both Union and Confederate troops at different times during the war.
